Fast food has become a popular choice among teenagers in Thimphu, with many young people turning to momos, burgers, fried chicken, noodles and other quick meals during lunch breaks, after college and when spending time with friends.
For some teenagers, buying food outside has become part of their daily routine. The availability of fast-food outlets, convenient locations and a variety of affordable options make it easier for students to eat outside rather than return home for a meal.
Taste and convenience are among the main reasons young people choose fast food. Busy college schedules, social activities and the influence of friends can also shape their eating habits.
“I usually eat fast food two or three times a week, mostly after college or when I am out with my friends,” said a teenager in Thimphu. “It is convenient, and I like the taste. Sometimes I don’t even plan to eat outside, but when my friends want to go, I join them.”
Eating out can also be a social activity for teenagers. Fast-food restaurants provide places where friends can meet, talk and spend time together after classes. As a result, the decision to buy fast food may depend not only on hunger but also on the company they keep and how they choose to spend their free time.
However, frequent fast-food consumption has raised concerns among some parents, particularly about whether teenagers are maintaining a balanced diet alongside their studies and other daily activities.
One parent said that young people sometimes choose convenience over home-cooked meals, especially when they are busy with college or meeting friends.
“My main concern is that they might eat fast food too often and not pay enough attention to their diet,” the parent said. “Eating outside occasionally is fine, but I think teenagers should also understand the importance of eating a variety of foods and maintaining a balanced diet.”
Parents believe that encouraging healthier eating habits requires more than simply telling teenagers to stop eating fast food. Providing nutritious meals at home, discussing food choices and helping young people understand the importance of a balanced diet may encourage them to make more informed decisions.
Food vendors in Thimphu also observe that teenagers make up part of their customer base, particularly during the afternoon and evening.
A local food vendor said that students frequently visit the shop after school or college, often in groups. Momos, noodles, burgers and fried chicken are among the items young customers commonly order.
“Many students come after college, especially in the afternoon. They usually come with their friends and order food that is quick to prepare and reasonably priced,” the vendor said.
According to the vendor, taste, price and convenience are important factors in attracting young customers. Students often have limited time between classes and other activities, making quick meals an appealing option.
The vendor also noted that groups of teenagers often visit together, suggesting that eating out is not always an individual choice but can be part of their social routine.
Although fast food is convenient, health professionals generally recommend a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutritious foods. Frequently relying on meals high in salt, saturated fat and added sugar, while eating too few fruits, vegetables and other nutritious foods, can affect overall diet quality.
For teenagers, who are still growing and developing, establishing healthy eating habits is particularly important. This does not necessarily mean avoiding fast food completely, but rather making sure it does not regularly replace a varied and balanced diet.
The popularity of fast food among teenagers in Thimphu reflects the different factors that influence everyday food choices, from taste and affordability to busy schedules and friendships.
As young people continue to balance college life, social activities and personal preferences, encouraging healthier choices may require cooperation among teenagers, parents and food businesses.
Ultimately, understanding why teenagers choose fast food is an important step towards promoting better eating habits. By making nutritious options accessible, providing information about balanced diets and encouraging moderation, young people can enjoy their favourite foods while paying greater attention to their overall health.
