Affordable fitness spaces helping students balance health and studies.
With a rising awareness of health and wellness among young people, students in Thimphu now have more accessible options to stay fit. Two gyms South Paw Studio and Fit Lab Thimphu are leading the charge, offering fitness programs that cater to both budget-conscious students and those seeking a premium gym experience.
South Paw Studio: Affordable and Accessible

Located just above Changgangkha Middle Secondary School, South Paw Studio is quickly gaining popularity among students for its affordability and supportive atmosphere. Known for its community-oriented approach, the gym provides a range of equipment and fitness programs that suit beginners and intermediate trainees alike.
The monthly membership is priced at Nu 3,000, which includes full access to gym facilities and group training sessions. The studio also offers a boxing program at the same rate, making it a unique option for students interested in trying combat sports in a safe, group environment.

For those seeking more personalized guidance, personal training is available for, and additional steam and sauna services are also offered at an extra cost.
“South Paw is a great space for students. It’s affordable, and the boxing program helps build confidence and discipline,” said Sonam Tashi, a College student who joined earlier this year.
Fit Lab Thimphu: A Premium Gym Experience
In contrast, Fit Lab Thimphu, located near Motithang Higher Secondary School, offers a more high-end option for student athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Opened in 2022, the gym is equipped with the latest machines, training tools, and recovery equipment.
Membership comes at a premium price of Nu 16,990 for six months, but the gym also provides personal training services for Nu 5,000 per month surprisingly lower than the personal training fees at many other facilities.
With its modern setup and proximity to several high schools, Fit Lab has become a preferred choice for students involved in sports and those serious about achieving specific fitness goals.
“We’re seeing more students enrolling, especially those preparing for sports tournaments or wanting to improve their overall fitness,” said a Fit Lab trainer.
Fitness on the Rise Among Youth
As Thimphu’s fitness culture grows, these gyms represent two sides of the same coin—one focused on affordability and community, the other on premium service and performance.
With both gyms located near major schools, students now have real choices to lead healthier lifestyles. Whether it’s building strength, learning boxing, or preparing for competitive sports, the fitness landscape in Thimphu is becoming more inclusive and diverse than ever before.
