Royal Thimphu College (RTC) has started its semester sports activities with football and badminton following the mid-term examinations, prompting some students to question why the events were held later than expected this semester.

Sports activities are an important part of campus life, giving students opportunities to take a break from academic responsibilities, develop teamwork and build connections beyond the classroom. However, the later start of this semester’s sports events has left some students waiting longer than they anticipated.

Dorji Nima, a student pursuing Communication Arts and Creative Media at RTC, shared concerns about the delay, reflecting the anticipation among students who had been looking forward to participating in the competitions.

Some students said they were accustomed to sports events taking place earlier in the semester and were surprised that the activities began only after the mid-term examinations. The change in timing has raised questions about what happened to the usual schedule and why students had to wait so long for the competitions.

For many students, college sports are more than just games. They offer a chance to represent their programmes, demonstrate their sporting abilities and interact with friends from different academic backgrounds. Such events can also help students manage academic pressure by providing opportunities for recreation and physical activity.

The delay has therefore drawn attention to the importance of balancing academic commitments with extracurricular activities. While examinations remain a priority, students’ interest in sports highlights the value of maintaining opportunities for participation throughout the semester.

Despite the later start, students can now look forward to competing in football and badminton. The college’s sports activities provide a platform for students to demonstrate their skills, encourage healthy competition and strengthen the sense of community on campus.

Registration deadlines for the competitions have also been announced. Badminton registration was scheduled to close on October 7 at 5 PM, while football registration was scheduled to close on October 9 at 5 PM. Students interested in participating were expected to complete their registration before the respective deadlines.

However, the reasons behind the delayed start of the sports events remain unclear. It is not yet confirmed whether the change was related to the academic calendar, examination schedules, logistical arrangements or other considerations. A response from the college’s sports coordinator or administration would help clarify the circumstances surrounding the timing.

The situation raises a broader question about how RTC schedules its extracurricular activities and whether future sports events could be organized earlier in the semester. Earlier scheduling could give students more time to prepare, register and participate while balancing their academic responsibilities.

As the football and badminton competitions get underway, students’ concerns highlight the importance of considering student expectations when planning campus activities. While the competitions offer a welcome opportunity for recreation and participation, many students hope that future sports events will begin earlier, allowing them to enjoy a more balanced and engaging college experience.

For now, the focus shifts to the upcoming competitions, with students looking forward to representing their teams and programmes on the field and badminton court.
