Gelephu — A major flood protection project in Gelephu has been completed, marking an important step toward improving the town’s resilience to flooding and protecting communities and infrastructure.
The completed project has been formally handed over to the Gelephu Mindfulness City. It focuses on strengthening four vulnerable stretches along rivers in Sarpang, where flooding has posed risks to settlements and infrastructure.
The project comes as Bhutan continues to face increasing challenges from extreme weather and changing climate conditions. Strengthening flood protection is becoming particularly important for rapidly developing areas such as Gelephu.
Gelephu is also undergoing major development under the Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative. With new infrastructure and economic activities planned for the region, improved protection against natural hazards will be essential for sustainable growth.
The completion of the flood protection works is therefore more than an infrastructure milestone. It represents an effort to make the growing southern city safer and better prepared for future climate-related risks.
As Gelephu continues its transformation, authorities are expected to place greater emphasis on resilient infrastructure, environmental protection and disaster preparedness.
