EU Delegation Visits Royal Thimphu College

Thimphu, Bhutan — Royal Thimphu College (RTC) recently welcomed a delegation from the European Union, led by His Excellency Serban Dimitrie Sturdza, Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Countries of South Asia. The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to engage with the college community and interact with students on issues relating to Bhutan, Europe and the wider international community.

The visit came at a time when Bhutan and the European Union continue to strengthen their relationship through cooperation in areas including education, sustainable development, governance, trade and regional affairs. Bhutan and the EU have maintained diplomatic relations since 1985, and their partnership has developed around shared interests in sustainable development, climate action and international cooperation.

During the visit to RTC, the delegation engaged with students and members of the college community. Such interactions provided students with an opportunity to learn more about European institutions and international relations while also sharing perspectives on Bhutanese society, culture and development.

For students, the engagement offered a platform to discuss issues beyond the classroom and gain a better understanding of how Bhutan interacts with international partners. Direct conversations with representatives connected to the European Parliament also exposed students to different perspectives on regional and global affairs.

The visit was particularly relevant to RTC because the college has developed a strong focus on international engagement and academic exchange. RTC’s prospectus notes that the college has partnerships with educational institutions around the world and provides students with study-abroad opportunities, including opportunities in several European countries.
