Date: September 2026
Bhutan has received official validation from the World Health Organization (WHO) for eliminating dog-mediated human rabies as a public health problem. Bhutan became the first country in the WHO South-East Asia Region to achieve this milestone.
The achievement came after years of dog vaccination, sterilisation, disease surveillance and community participation. Bhutan has recorded zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies since June 2023.
