THIMPHU — Live music is becoming an increasingly visible part of Thimphu’s entertainment scene, with local musicians taking to the stage at venues such as Lassi and Encore. These spaces are providing singers and musicians with opportunities to perform before live audiences, gain experience and establish themselves within Bhutan’s growing music community.
For independent and emerging artists, live performances offer an important avenue to introduce their work to new audiences. While digital platforms allow musicians to reach listeners beyond Bhutan, performing in front of a live audience creates a more direct connection, allowing artists to interact with listeners and receive immediate feedback.
For many young musicians, regular performances are also helping build confidence and develop essential stage skills. Performing in different settings and before varied audiences can help artists become more comfortable on stage while learning how to engage and respond to their audiences.
Venues such as Lassi and Encore also benefit from live music, as performances contribute to the atmosphere and give customers another form of entertainment while socialising with friends. The growing presence of live performances reflects a broader interest in creating spaces where music can be experienced beyond digital platforms.
Despite these opportunities, independent musicians continue to face challenges. Securing regular performance slots, balancing schedules and generating a stable income from music can be difficult, particularly for artists who are still establishing their careers. For many, live performances remain an important stepping stone rather than a reliable source of full-time income.
Nevertheless, the growing number of venues supporting live music is creating more opportunities for local artists to showcase their abilities and connect with audiences. Each performance provides musicians with a chance to gain experience, refine their craft and build a following.
As Thimphu’s entertainment landscape continues to evolve, live music is emerging as an important platform for local musicians. For artists looking to develop their skills, reach new listeners and pursue music professionally, the city’s live performance spaces are becoming valuable places to begin.
