Thimphu, Bhutan — Cultural festivals are becoming increasingly popular among young people in Thimphu as more youths take an interest in Bhutanese traditions, music, dance, food and traditional arts.
In recent years, cultural events and festivals have provided young people with opportunities to experience Bhutanese culture while also spending time with friends and family. Many youths are attracted to these events because they combine traditional performances with entertainment and social activities.
For some young people, cultural festivals are also a way to learn about traditions that they may not experience regularly in their daily lives. Traditional dances, music, traditional clothing and local food allow youths to connect with Bhutanese culture in a more enjoyable and interactive way.
A college student in Thimphu said that attending cultural festivals is a good way for young people to enjoy themselves while learning about their own culture. “It is more interesting when we can experience the culture ourselves instead of only learning about it in books,” the student said.
Organisers and cultural groups also see youth participation as important for preserving Bhutanese traditions. With the influence of social media and modern entertainment, cultural festivals can provide a platform where traditional culture can be presented in ways that attract younger audiences.
Young people have also started sharing their experiences from cultural events through social media, helping more people become aware of festivals and cultural activities taking place in Thimphu.
As cultural festivals continue to attract younger audiences, they could play an important role in keeping Bhutanese traditions alive while giving youths a space to celebrate, learn and connect with their culture.
