Bhutan debuts internationally as Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan showcase rising talent in South Asian youth sports.
The South Asia Regional Championship, held from August 15–22, brought together youth players from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Bhutan, strengthening sporting ties in the region. Bhutan marked its first international badminton event, despite struggling against more experienced teams.

The week-long tournament highlighted the growing popularity of badminton among South Asian youth. Sri Lanka emerged as the dominant team, winning most of their matches, while Nepal and Pakistan also displayed promising young players.
For Bhutan, the championship was a historic milestone. The country not only fielded its youth players internationally for the first time but also hosted the event after renovating and upgrading badminton facilities to meet international standards. This step reflects Bhutan’s commitment to developing new sports beyond its traditional strongholds.
Although Bhutanese players lost all their matches, they still managed to secure first place in the Under-17 category rankings, signaling future potential for the nation’s young athletes. Sports officials said the experience would prove invaluable in preparing players for upcoming tournaments.
Badminton federations across South Asia welcomed Bhutan’s entry, emphasizing that participation and exposure are critical for smaller nations to grow in competitive sports. Regional coaches also noted that such tournaments help build friendships and understanding among youth from neighboring countries.
The championship underscored the importance of sports diplomacy, offering young players an opportunity not only to compete but also to learn from one another.
The event closed with optimism for South Asia’s sporting future. As one Sri Lankan coach remarked, “Every nation here is building champions for tomorrow. Bhutan’s first step is small but deeply significant for regional sports.”
