Thimphu, Bhutan — Thimphu residents are no strangers to the growing problem of traffic congestion. With the city rapidly expanding and more vehicles on the road, Thimphu’s infrastructure has struggled to keep up with the demand. In response to this, the Thimphu Traffic Department has announced a comprehensive new plan to address the city’s traffic woes and improve road safety. The new measures include the introduction of safer pedestrian crossings, the installation of updated traffic signals, and an expansion of the city’s public transportation system.

The changes, set to begin this month, are designed to ease congestion, reduce accidents, and make commuting more efficient for everyone. The first phase of the plan includes upgrading traffic signals at key intersections, including the busy Norzin Lam and Chubachu junctions. New pedestrian walkways will be built in high-traffic areas, allowing people to cross the streets more safely. Additionally, the public bus system will be expanded, with more buses added to key routes to provide residents with more affordable and eco-friendly transportation options. The expansion is set to roll out next year and is expected to reduce the number of cars on the road, easing congestion during rush hours.

The government is also focusing on educating the public about road safety and encouraging the use of public transportation. According to Tenzin Norbu,a local traffic safety officer, the initiative is not just about building infrastructure; it’s about changing behaviors. “We want people to think more about their impact on the environment and public safety,” he said. The government has also partnered with local schools and community groups to launch an awareness campaign, emphasizing the importance of safe driving, walking, and using public transit.

With the population of Thimphu steadily increasing, city officials are confident that these measures will help maintain the capital’s livability and safety. The Thimphu Traffic Department plans to evaluate the effectiveness of the project in phases, with further developments expected as the city grows.
