Festivals Demand Boosts Meat Sales

Meat shops in Thimphu witnessed a sharp rise in business during the Blessed Rainy Day, with sales multiplying several times compared to normal days. Vendors across the capital reported that the holiday brought an unprecedented surge in customers, with families buying meat in large quantities to prepare traditional feasts and celebratory meals.

On ordinary days, most meat shops earn between Nu. 10,000 and Nu. 15,000, depending on location and customer flow. However, during the Blessed Rainy Day, earnings soared to Nu. 50,000 to Nu. 60,000 in a single day, giving vendors a significant boost to their annual income. The sharp increase demonstrates the strong connection between cultural festivities and seasonal business growth in Thimphu.

“Sales were nonstop from morning till evening. Customers came in large numbers and bought in bulk for their family gatherings,” said Kiran Rai, who runs a meat shop in Norling building in
Thimphu. He explained that while households typically buy half a kilogram to one kilogram of meat on normal days, festive occasions see families purchasing three to four kilograms at once, particularly for beef, pork, and chicken.

Other shopkeepers in the city echoed similar experiences. Many noted that religious holidays and major celebrations such as Losar, Thruebab, and tshechus consistently bring the highest sales of the year. “These festivals are essential for sustaining our business,” said another vendor. “The rest of the year is steady but modest, so the seasonal surge helps cover expenses and prepare for slower months.”

The impact of the holiday rush extends beyond individual shops. Suppliers and transporters also benefit from increased demand, ensuring a steady flow of fresh meat to meet customer needs. Many vendors prepare in advance, stocking larger quantities and coordinating deliveries to avoid shortages during peak festive days.
