Heavy Rains Expose Long-Standing Drainage Issues in Thimphu, Leaving Dangrina Residents Struggling with Persistent Flooding

Thimphu, September 16, 2025 – A sudden flood caused by poor drainage and rising water levels has blocked the lower Dechencholing road in Thimphu, leaving residents struggling to commute. The flooding occurred after heavy rainfall in the area, with streams from Dangrina overflowing into the road and carrying debris.

The road remains submerged and blocked, causing major inconvenience to locals. Residents living in Dangrina are now forced to travel through the Royal Bhutan Government compound gate to reach the town, as the Dechencholing road is still impassable. “It’s been very difficult, especially for people who travel daily to work and school. We have no choice but to take the longer route,” said one resident.

The poor drainage system has been a long-standing issue in Dechencholing, and the heavy September rains have once again highlighted the risks faced by the community.
